톈안먼 시계: '의뢰자 위협으로 경매 철회'된 이유

Tiananmen Square watch withdrawn from controversial sale by auction house

 

1989년 톈안먼 사태를 진압한 중국군에게 준 기념 시계가 SNS로 협박을 받아 경매가 철회되었다.

펠로우 옥션(Fellows Auctioneers)측은 성명을 통해 이 시계의 주인이 자신의 안전을 우려해서 철회했으며, 공산당 당국이 중국 인민해방군 부대에 이런 시계를 지급했다고 전했다.

주최 측은 이 시계의 주인이 "우리가 아는 한" 중국군이나 정부와 관련이 없다고 말했다.

스테인리스 스틸 제품에는 '반란 진압 기념 89.6'이 새겨져 있었고, 4월 19일 경매에 부쳐질 예정이었다.

마오쩌둥 주석의 엄격한 통제가 지난 후, 1989년까지 약 10년 동안 중국 공산당 정부는 꾸준히 개방의 길을 걸으며 소량의 자유 기업을 허용해 왔다.

언론의 자유와 심지어 민주주의와 같은 사회적 자유 확대를 요구하는 대규모 시위가 그 해 4월에 시작되었다. 시위대는 베이징 중심부인 자금성과 인민대회당 앞 텐안먼 광장(천안문 광장 Tiananmen Square 天安门广场)을 점거했다.

6월 3일 밤, 모든 수단을 동원하여 시위대를 해산시키기 위한 목적으로 무장 부대가 베이징으로 들어왔다. 그리고, 학생들을 보호하려는 거리의 시민들에 의해 저지되자 군대는 발포했다.

중국 정부에 의해 공식적인 사망자 수가 발표되지는 않았지만, 인권 단체들은 그것이 수천 명은 아니더라도 수백 명에 달했다고 추정하고 있다.

"톈안먼 광장의 대학살은 중국 역사뿐만 아니라 인류 역사에 있어서 매우 어두운 페이지입니다."라고 런던대학교의 중국 동양 및 아프리카 연구소의 책임자인 스티브 창은 말한다.

"모든 게 잘못되었어요. 주최 측은 이런 것을 경매하는 것을 결코 수락하지 말았어야 했고... 주인은 그것을 경매에 내놓지 말았어야 했어요. 학살을 통해 이익을 얻으려는 사람은 부끄러워해야 합니다."

펠로우는 이 시계가 '국제적인 관심'을 끌고 있으며 '1989년 6월의 사건을 상기시키는 것'이라고 말했다.

 

"과거 우리는 세계 분쟁의 모든 측면에서 전쟁 훈장, 찰스 1세의 시해를 기념하는 반지, 그리고 전쟁 포로들로부터 획득한 시계를 팔았습니다. 과거의 사건에 대해 논평을 할 수 있는 곳은 우리가 아니다. 역사적 사건을 조명하고 공손하고 편견 없는 방식으로 보고하는 것이 중요하다."라고 말했다.

A statement from Fellows Auctioneers:

 

A watch given to troops by the Communist Party Beijing Committee and Beijing Municipal Government following the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests was listed as Lot 173 in the Luxury Watch Sale at on Monday 19th April.

 

It was given to a member of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), and the words inscribed on the watch include “89.6 In Commemoration of Quelling the Rebellion”.

 

In the process of consigning this item to auction, our team undertook a large amount of research to verify the provenance of this piece. To the best of our knowledge, the vendor is not associated with the PLA, nor the Chinese government.

 

As an auction house, we often sell items with history. We believed this item is of international interest. It was a reminder of the events of June 1989. In the past we have sold war medals from all sides of global conflicts, a ring commemorating the regicide of Charles I, and watches acquired from prisoners of war. It is not our place to comment on events of the past. It is important for us to shine a light on historical events and report upon them in a respectful and unbiased manner.

 

Threats made on social media against the owner of this watch, has caused the vendor to express concerns about their safety. We have taken the decision to remove this watch from auction.
