Last year was a turning point for the Oscar category which had for decades been known as best foreign language film.

 

지난해는 수십 년간 '외국어영화상(Best Foreign Language Film: 출품국가에 수여)'으로 알려졌던 오스카 부문의 전환점이 되었다.

영화 예술 과학 아카데미는 '외국'이라는 단어가 시대에 뒤떨어진 것처럼 느껴지기 시작했다고 결정했다.

2020년 새롭게 바뀐 '국제영화상(Best International Feature Film)'은 한국의 블랙 코미디 <기생충>에게 돌아갔다. 전 세계 관객들과 비평가들에게 감동을 준 이 영화는 작품상을 포함해 총 4개의 아카데미 상을 받았다.

봉준호 감독의 <기생충>은 전 세계 박스오피스에서 2.5억 달러 이상을 벌어들이며, 이 카테고리가 기본적으로 틈새 관객들을 위한 예술(실험) 영화 상영관용이라는 인식을 깨뜨렸다.

이제 규정 변경으로 전문가 패널뿐 아니라 모든 아카데미 회원들이 투표 과정에 참여할 수 있게 되었다. 그러나 국제적인 특징 범주에 대한 두 가지 기본 요건은 변하지 않았다: 국가들은 여전히 단일 영화만 제출할 수 있고 그것은 매우 제한된 영어 콘텐츠로 허용된다.(영어가 많이 사용되면 국제 영화가 아니라는 개념)

93개의 출품작 중 최종 5개 작품이 걸러졌다.
